Late Night Emails to an Estate Planning Attorney

It’s okay. You’re not alone.

I often pull up my email inbox in the morning and have emails from people I’ve never met. 10:30pm; 12am; 1:37am. Subject lines that read “Estate Planning Question” or “Wills Question” or “Wills for a Married Couple with Kids”.

Something’s on your mind and it’s been on your mind all day. But, life gets in the way and you push it to the back of your mind. After you put the kids to bed and clean up from the day, you’re finally relaxing and unwinding. You’re on your phone, checking your Facebook News Feed. The TV’s on in the background but you’re not actively paying attention to it. Then the thought comes back to you after you see a cute picture of your friend’s baby.

You’ve got kids and they depend on you. What’s going to happen to them if something happens to you?

You immediately think about all the times you are driving to work, or having a date night, or letting the kids stay with your parents for the weekend. “What if I get in a car accident on the way home from work?”

It’s okay. You’re not alone.

You pull up Google and search “what happens to my kids after I die?” and all of the search results have to do with Wills and Guardianship and creating an Estate Plan. Ok – so you need a Will. Now what?

You start searching things like “how do I create a will?” and “wills attorney in North Carolina” and browse one of a dozen law firm websites and one of a thousand articles about wills and protecting your kids after you pass.

It’s a lot to take in at one time. There’s so much information – more than you could have ever realized. Where do you begin?

It’s okay. You’re not alone.

You click on the email link of one website you found appealing, for whatever reason. “I need to set up a will to protect my kids.” You click send. Now what?

That was hard. Lawyers are intimidating. And you don’t like thinking about leaving this world and leaving your kids behind.

It’s okay. You’re not alone.

It’s okay to worry. And it’s okay that you haven’t created an estate plan yet.

You just took the hardest and most important step: making contact and getting the process started. Now that you’ve gotten the process started, relax and let us take care of the rest.

It’s okay. We’ve got it from here.

Sincerely,
Paul Yokabitus
